"Baxter Seminary was the successor to two schools, Bloomington College, Bloomington, Tennessee, and Wesleyan Memorial
Academy, Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee. In 1896 the buildings at Bloomington College burned, and later the school
was moved to Red Boiling Springs where its name was changed to Wesleyan Memorial Academy. After some years it became
apparent to (Methodist) church leaders that Red Boiling Springs was not a desirable location for the school to render
maximum service to its constituency. Therefore in 1908, the school was moved to Baxter, Tennessee, and the name was

Baxter Seminary was granted a charter by the Methodist Episcopal Church on August 18,1910. It filled a huge void in western Putnam County and adjoining counties for both elementary and secondary schools. Grades one through twelve were offered and taught. It was not until an elementary school was built in Baxter, in 1922, that the Seminary focused on and only taught grades nine through twelve. Shortly after, in 1923, Harry L. Upperman arrived in Baxter with his wife Elma to shutter the school. The Uppermans saw the continuing need for a secondary school to serve the area so they decided to try and continue the school to fill that need. This was the beginning of the school that would become the highly regarded institution that produced outstanding graduates in multiple fields and that prepared its students to successfully work, live, and interact well with others. The history of Baxter Seminary can not be severed from that of Dr. Upperman as his history was the History of Baxter Seminary in so many ways and so many times. Read more in Brief History and History in the News. Baxter Seminary served over 10,000 students from its start up until its closing and its sale to the Putnam County School system in 1959. The campus and facilities then became the Dr. Harry L. Upperman High School. It was no longer associated with the Methodist church but many of the traditions remained as did the motto, Truth Honor Loyalty Service.
